Reason 1: The Tartar Was Insulating Your Roots

Reason 3: Exposed Root Is Dentine, And Dentine Feels Everything
The crown of your tooth ā the bit you see when you smile ā is covered in enamel. Enamel has no nerve supply and no direct route to the pulp. It is essentially a dense mineral helmet. It does not feel cold.
The root is different. The root has NO enamel.
Root surface is dentine, and dentine is a living tissue riddled with microscopic channels called dentinal tubules, which run from the outer surface all the way in toward the nerve. When those tubules are open and exposed, cold, heat, sweet foods, acid and even a blast of air cause rapid fluid movement inside the tubules, and that fluid movement is interpreted by the nerve as a sharp, short, electric pain. This is the hydrodynamic theory of dentine sensitivity, first described by BrƤnnstrƶm in the 1960s, and it remains the accepted explanation for why exposed root surfaces hurt.
So: your root was exposed by recession. Tartar was sitting over it. The tartar came off. The tubules are now open to your morning coffee and the cold tap. That is the sensation. Inflamed gum tissue is puffy. It is swollen with fluid and blood, and that swelling makes the gum look fuller and sit higher up the tooth than it truly should. For the overwhelming majority of people, the answer is days ā not weeks and certainly not permanently.
Gum tenderness is usually the first to go, often settling within two to four days as the soft tissue recovers from being instrumented.
